The Corpus

Held means the file is on disk. Staged means it sits in the directory the server reads. Served means a manifest row points at it, so a reader can actually reach it. A text can be held and staged and still invisible, and several are.

Scripture and original-language texts: 84 held, 61 of them served. Commentators, church fathers and reference works: 128 held, 121 served.

66 of those voices are held in the language they actually wrote, 13,464,206 words of Greek, Latin, Syriac and Armenian. That number was 1 on the morning of 27 August 2026.

Licence is recorded only where there is evidence: a notice displayed with the text, a licence declared in the file itself, or a printing old enough to settle it. Where none of those exists the row says unassessed. It does not say public domain. The absence of a copyright notice is not evidence that a text is free, and treating it as such is how a licensed text once came to be served here with its attribution unmet.

These 23 are on disk and cannot be reached from any page. Some are withheld on purpose, over an unresolved copyright question or a versification mismatch. Others were simply never wired up, which is the more interesting category: the work of obtaining them is already done and only the last step is missing.

Among them are the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible, MorphGNT and a statistically restored Greek New Testament, all of which would add real value to the reader.

61 texts of Scripture are reachable on a verse page: the Hebrew, the Greek of both Testaments, the Latin tradition, and the English readings grouped by how literally they render. Where a text carries a licence condition, its notice is displayed with it.

Not everything available may be served, and the reasons are worth stating plainly rather than leaving as a silent absence.

Corpus Corporum (mlat.uzh.ch) -- all of Migne's Patrologia Latina, ~150M words. NON-COMMERCIAL only, and the site takes Stripe payments. Of most texts it says only that 'as far as we could determine' they are PD or were granted TO IT -- not a chain of title.

Peshitta, ETCBC edition -- 92 Syriac Bible files. CC BY-NC 4.0. Non-commercial. Would have been the site's first Syriac Bible.

Rahlfs' Septuagint, 1935 -- 85 Greek Bible files. Still in copyright. The files declare CC BY-SA, but a transcriber cannot grant what they do not own. Swete (1887-94) is the public-domain alternative and is what the site serves.

NET Bible -- the translators' notes (50,466 entries) and the text. Their terms grant free use of the Scripture text 'WITHOUT the NET Bible notes' -- the notes are explicitly carved out and no separate note permission is published. The text's free clause requires giving it away with 'no bundling with paid materials', and this site takes payments, so distributing the whole translation is not clearly covered. Held, never rendered. The route to serving it is written permission, not a favourable reading.

Hislop, The Two Babylons. Held but deliberately not served: its scholarship is discredited. Not a licence question.

Public domain means the work is old enough that copyright has expired, which for a printed edition is a question about the date of that printing, not about the age of the author.

A licence such as CC BY or CC BY-SA means the text is still in copyright but its holder permits use on conditions. Those conditions are met here by naming the source with the text. Where the licence adds share-alike, anything derived from that text carries the same terms.

Non-commercial means we may not use it, because this site takes payments. Two substantial corpora were turned away on exactly that ground.

Unassessed means nobody has established the position yet, and the text is not served until somebody does.
