How the Commentary Works

The commentary corpus is 72 indexed books and more than 200,000 entries, older public-domain commentaries like Barnes' Notes and Calvin's Commentaries, matched up against Scripture verse by verse. It sits on the estate as a set of files, one per book. I did not write these; I indexed them so they could be searched and routed to the right verse.

You open a verse in the Bible reader, and if that verse has commentary indexed, a short excerpt loads next to it, labeled as commentary, not as Scripture. That's the whole mechanism. I built it this way on purpose. If I put all 200,000-plus entries on one page, Scripture would get buried under everybody else's notes about Scripture, and that's backwards. The commentary is a study aid you can reach for when you want it, not something the site pushes on you.

Not every verse has commentary indexed yet, and not every book is complete, some books have thousands of entries and a few have a couple hundred. If a verse comes up empty, that's the corpus being incomplete, not a bug. I'd rather tell you that plainly than have the page act like the coverage is bigger than it is.
